Ergonomics | Safety & Comfort

Importance of Ergonomics

In the simplest terms, ergonomics is the study of people's efficiency in their work environment. Being able to work as efficient as possible is the key to success. In order to increase productivity, it is important that each employee feels comfortable and safe. Stauffer understands that working under different conditions can cause muscle fatigue over a period of time. We all come in different shapes and sizes don't we? It is important to us that we feel comfortable when working, regardless of the environment we are in. With ergonomic safety products employees will be able to work for longer periods of time while reducing the amount of discomfort they incur. By using PPE that causes less stress on the body, it will help reduce the amount of injuries and claims in your workplace.

With a wide range of ergonomically developed products such as back supports, kneeling pads, wrist wraps, knee pads, elbow pads, matting, and insoles, the employees will be able to feel comfortable while practicing correct safety procedures. One of the biggest problems you'll come across when talking to employees in a workplace is that they don't want to wear the PPE because it's not comfortable. Ergonomic PPE is engineered to fit more comfortably and precisely with adjustability to the body while providing proper safety in the workplace. Implementing a variety of PPE that helps in maintaining a good posture with less exertion will ultimately increase production.

As most of us know, when we do a repetitive motion for long periods of time it can cause our muscles to cramp or tighten up. That repetitive motion can cause you to get an (RMI) or Repetitive Motion Injury. As time goes on, if you don't come up with a strategy for prevention of RMI it can later develop into (MSD) or Musculoskeletal Disorder. Musculoskeletal Disorders are injuries and disorders that effect the human body's movement or musculoskeletal system. MSD is one of the top reasons for employees being absent short term. In order to prevent RMI or MSD, make a strategy and see what ergonomical options are available to you. Having the freedom and comfort of adjustability so that your workers don't suffer from MSD is invaluable.

What does this mean for you as a company?

As a company, you always want to put your employees in your best interest. You put a lot of faith in them to be at work every day and to work hard. What better way to show your employees you care about them then by making sure they aren't getting hurt. By applying ergonomics, it shows how much the company truly cares about safety and health of the employees. As it says in Ergonomics Plus, "Healthy employees are your most valuable asset; creating and fostering the safety & health culture at your company will lead to better human performance for your organization." Overall, reducing injuries while making the workers more comfortable is going to increase productivity and save the company money.
